Pen Pal

Every subscriber will have one of the How Novel team as their own, personal Pen Pal who will write to them each month- and they can write back!

Every box will feature a handwritten note from your personal Pen Pal. Enclosed will be a blank copy of one of our gorgeous note cards. All you need to do is apply the relevant postage and send it back to us. Alternatively, you can email it direct to your Pen Pal who will remain the same for the duration of your subscription. Your Pen Pal will respond to your note with a bespoke reply the following month, allowing you to then continue the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Am I tied into a long contract?

No! We hate contracts as much as you, which is why you can pause your subscription at any time and not be billed until you're ready. Equally, if you do want to leave us you can cancel at any time*, too. We'll still be friends! To do either of the above, all you need to do is subscriptions@hownovel.co.uk before your next rebilling date and we will sort the rest! *Please note: all subscription cancellation requests must be made 48 hours prior to the renewal date. Any requests recieved after this time may not be processed and you may still be charged for that month.



When will the first box arrive?

If you sign up prior to the 22nd of the month, your first shipment will be dispatched the same month. If you sign up after the 22nd of the month, your first shipment will be the following month. For example: You sign up on the 23rd of September. Your first shipment will be sent in October on the standard shipping day. All children's subscription shipments are dispatched on the 28th of each calendar month.



When will it be delivered?

Monthly. We dispatch all parcels on or before the 28th of each month. For UK delivery, it usually takes two business days for your parcel to reach you. International customers should expect to wait around a week from the dispatch date. You will be notified via email of your order being dispatched! If you have any questions on this (we know it can be confusing) please get in touch!



When will I be billed?

When you initially sign up, you will be billed immediately once you have completed checkout so we can get to work on your first box! Subsequent months will be billed on the 15th of each calendar month, according to your billing frequency.



Do you ship internationally?

Yes! We would love to have subscribers from across the globe, as we do now for our standalone Mystery Books. There is an additional charge for delivery outside of the UK, but is heavily subsidised. The exact cost will depend on your region and be shown at checkout when you sign up. Plus, every time a customer from a country new to us orders, we mark it on the map in our office!



Can I refer a friend?

What if they have already read the Mystery Book?

If the recipient has already read or owns the Mystery Book you receive, as with our standalone Mystery Books, you can return it to us and we will swap it for a new one of your choosing. In practice, we will add an additional book to the shipment following the date we recieve the book you wish to replace. So, if you had sent a book back to us and we have it by 10 November, we would add an extra book to your December shipment. To request this, please get in touch with us via the Live Chat at the bottom right of you screen. Please note, we cannot cover the shipping cost of returning the book.



What age range is this suitable for?

The Mystery Books in our selection each month will be across a wide range of genres and ages, but we would suggest 8 as a minimum age currently. Our selection will go right up to young adults so older teenagers and even adults will find something they will enjoy!



How do preorders work?

Our first box will ship in January, meaning you are able to preorder now to be included in our first batch (perfect timing for Christmas!). You can either hit the 'Subscribe' button above, or take a look at our Children's Gift Subscriptions. The first box will ship on 28 January.
